ODEAN POPE
“Pope is a bad, bad, bad, beautiful musician, man.”
     — Joe Lovano

Master saxophonist Odean Pope has for decades carried the torch of his distinctive sound through various parts of the jazz landscape.  South Carolina-born but raised in jazz-rich Philadelphia, Pope's first high-profile affiliation was with organist Jimmy Smith when he replaced John Coltrane in the band.

"One of the most intense - and overwhelmingly beautiful - sounds in jazz today."
— Hot House Jazz (New York)

He also trained with members of the Philadelphia Orchestra as well as at The Paris Conservatory.  From 1979 until 2002, he anchored the many ensembles led by legendary drummer Max Roach.  His Saxophone Choir was founded in 1977 and remains the prototypical large group for the instrument.  He continues to lead that group as well as an explosive trio. His new release "Odean's List" is hailed as a welcome return of this unique and powerful voice in jazz.

"Jubilatory music that never trips over its ambitions."
— So Jazz (France)
